Contrasting protist communities (Cercozoa: Rhizaria) in pristine and earthworm-invaded North American deciduous forests

چکیده

Abstract Earthworms are considered ecosystem engineers due to their fundamental impact on soil structure, processes and other biota. An invasion of non-native earthworm species has altered soils North America since European settlement, a process currently expanding into still earthworm-free forest ecosystems continuous spread increasing temperatures owing climate change. Although earthworms known modify microbial diversity activity, it is as yet unclear how eukaryote consumers in food webs will be affected. Here, we investigated affects the Cercozoa, one most dominant protist taxa soils. composition native cercozoan community clearly shifted response invasion, communities different forests showed distinct responses. We identified 39 operational taxonomic units (OTUs) exclusively indicating hinting at an earthworm-associated Cercozoa. In particular, Woronina pythii , hyper-parasite plant-parasitic Oomycota American forests, increased strongly presence invasive earthworms, influence oomycete potentially health, which requires further research.

Dietary flexibility aids Asian earthworm invasion in North American forests.

On a local scale, invasiveness of introduced species and invasibility of habitats together determine invasion success. A key issue in invasion ecology has been how to quantify the contribution of species invasiveness and habitat invasibility separately. Conventional approaches, such as comparing the differences in traits and/or impacts of species between native and/or invaded ranges, do not det...

Polyubiquitin insertions and the phylogeny of Cercozoa and Rhizaria.

A single or double amino acid insertion at the monomer-monomer junction of the universal eukaryotic protein polyubiquitin is unique to Cercozoa and Foraminifera, closely related 'core' phyla in the protozoan infrakingdom Rhizaria. We screened 11 other candidate rhizarians for this insertion: Radiozoa (polycystine and acantharean radiolaria), a 'microheliozoan', and Apusozoa; all lack it, suppor...

Seasonal Variation of Earthworm Abundances and Biomass in Natural Forests and Plantations (North of Iran)

Soil productivity and plant growth are usually affected by biological activities of earthworms. The objective of this study was a comparative evaluation of earthworm abundances in 20-year-old plantations of Alder, Oak, Maple and Cypress with the adjacent natural mixed broad-leaved deciduous forest in the Caspian region of Iran. In this research one sample plot, each 1 ha; was selected in every ...

Litter decomposition in earthworm-invaded northen hardwood forests: Role of invasion degree and litter chemistry

The effects of invasive earthworms on decomposition are little known, and the controls of their effect on decomposition may be different than those of microbes. Sugar maple–dominated forests previously devoid of earthworms in the western Great Lakes region (USA) exhibit different degrees of earthworm invasion, presenting a natural experiment to study its effects on litter decomposition. We hypo...

Algivorous Freshwater Protists of the Phylum Cercozoa (Rhizaria)

In freshwater ecosystems exist various elusive protists that consume microalgae in a selective and specialised manner. Some of these ‘parasitoid’ micro-organisms have been known since the mid of the 19 century and were studied by several naturalists. However, difficulties in long-term maintenance and the convoluted taxonomic history of such forms strongly impeded further research. The present k...
